I was sitting in the airport last week, and my main worry was the weather. Flight delays are common when storms move in, and I was anxious to get home. My fears came true as the speakers announced my flight was cancelled. An experienced business traveler, I immediately made my way to the nearest ticket booth. I managed to get on stand-by for several flights, but my hope to be home soon became just a dream.
Waiting in an airport is often boring, and tensions run high during weather events. The terminal became crowded as people arrived for flights that would not leave for days. I had managed to find a good seat, so I had a comfortable place to view the growing mass of humanity. A young woman sat next to me and asked where I was headed. We chatted for a while, and then she moved on to meet someone else.
While business is my field, I’m not a particularly outgoing person. I generally work behind closed doors, and there are seldom more than a few people in any meetings. This suits my personality well, but I admired the young woman as I watched her go around the room and make new friends all over the area. She eventually came back to me, and asked me if I’d like to meet some of her new friends.
Her offer was a welcome one because I hadn’t brought any books or magazines with me to read while waiting. One at a time, she brought people over to chat with me. It was an interesting way to pass the two days it took before I finally managed to catch a flight home. I will be forever grateful to that observant and friendly young woman who took the time to fill my days with new friends.
